August 2006
Well, I guess the Summer holidays are over. I went back to Ireland for a month
and didn't touch a musical instrument except for 2 sessions (with
producers Alvin Sweeney and Paul Thomas) and a couple of sit ins at
trad sessions. But now I'm definitely ready to get back to work.
I started back with a gig with Coco Montoya up in Kingston, Ontario
in Canada. Nice festival, really great friendly folks up there and they actually do say "ey"
all the time.
I'm going to be doing some shows in September with Michelle Shocked (on a
double bill with Dan Hicks). We play Oregon, LA, Anaheim and Saratoga.
The Under EP was finally released and it's been getting an
amazing reaction. The 92.7 Energy FM Sunday night show 'Below Zero'
did a feature on Under and put two of the songs into rotation.
We've also been picking up a lot of internet radio play in the U.S., Holland and France.
Our website is up and running at www.underthemusic.com
and has all the tracks, photos etc... The obligatory myspace page is at
http://www.myspace.com/underthemusic
I did a month long tour of the U.S. with Coco Montoya
in June. I've also been working with ex-Santana singer Tony Lindsay on his
solo project. Another great singer I've been gigging with is Fred
Ross. I did some very fun gigs with the mighty Clare accordion
player Andrew Mc Namara. Session wise, I did a lot of keyboard and programming
work with the wonderfully unique Liz Kennedy, both on her debut CD 'Clean White Shirt'
and the follow up (producer Joel Jaffe). Michael Franti and Spearhead's CD 'Yell Fire' which
I played on and features Sly and Robbie and Pink came out in July and Beth Waters'
new CD sounds brilliant and is due out in September. I also did sessions with producers
George Daly and James Caran. Additionally I've begun to do programming, tracking and production work
in my own home studio which i'm very excited about.
November 2005 I'm
going to be doing some work with Michael Franti and Spearhead,
starting with a show for the inmates at Folsom prison and three
shows at San Francisco's Fillmore (November 25, 26 and 27). Then I
hit the studio with them to record some tracks for their forthcoming
CD 'Yell Fire' and play Maui, HI on New Years, the Jam
Cruise heading to Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Mexico in January, Park
City, Utah for Sundance and some Arizona dates.
On February 11th I'll be playing the Riverwalk Blues Festival in
Fort Lauderdale, Florida with the great Elvin Bishop.
Also, we hope to have the Under EP out in late February/ early
March.
October 2005: First
off, I'd like to send a prayer out to all those affected by the
hurricanes. I'm not sure how much traffic I get on my humble website
but I'd like to include these two links for donations: http://www.redcross.org/ http://www.dontstopthemusic.org/
On
October 11 I'll be playing a benefit with Zigaboo Modeliste for New
Orleans restaurant workers at Pier 23 in San Francisco organised by
the Don't Stop The Music foundation. I'm also playing some gigs at
San Francisco's Condor Club backing up New Orleans saxaphone player
Red Morgan (I also did a gig there kicking organ bass with Eddie Zip
on piano). It's a great place to hang out - good sounds, good food.
2005 has been hectic and fun. Touring with Coco Montoya took
up most of my time. We went all over the U.S. and hit Canada, Brazil
and Spain. Brazil was a real treat for me - I rekindled my obsession
with the whole world of Brazilian music and also went to see Santos
FC (home of Pele) play a home game with new Brazilian futebol star
(and now Real Madrid player) Robinho playing a starring role. Can't
wait for next years World Cup! Back to music - Coco is gearing up to
record a new CD (produced by Little Feat's Paul Barrere) and I'm
looking forward to being involved with that.
In between
tours I've been writing and recording a CD with Under; the band that
myself, Jen Triano (vocals) and Ricky Carter (drums) put together.
Website is at http://www.underthemusic.com/
and live dates will happen very soon.
I took a trip back to
Ireland and while I was there did a fun gig with Jerry Fish and the
Mudbug Club (check 'em out, cool band: http://www.jerry-fish.com/ )and
a session with Dennis Farrell, Conor Brady producing. Back here I
put a bunch of keys on Beth Waters next CD (which sounds great) -
produced by Mike Winger. I did the music for an exhibition of
African art, some sessions with producer Joel Jaffe, some worship
music for Vineyard Records and sessions with Gary Hitchcock, Essence
and John Ronniger. And in between I played for every 6 and 7 year
old in a public school in San Francisco as part of the SF symphony's
AIMS program.
So at last, the year seems to be somewhat
winding down now, at least the touring part. I've still got some out
of town stuff with Coco and some local work with Zigaboo, Annie
Sampson and gigs at the Condor etc... but right now I'm looking
forward to enjoying San Francisco for a while
New Years 2004/2005 It seems like the first part of this year is going to
be dominated by two very different projects. The first is some
extensive touring with blues guitarist/ singer Coco Montoya (see
calendar page - we're going to be all over the place). And when I'm
not on the road with Coco, I'll be playing for a bunch of six year
olds as part of the San Francisco Symphony produced AIMS program.
Along with Danjuma Adamu and Todd Denman we've been working up some
great tunes and fun ways to present our unique blend of African,
Irish and American influences to the kids in the San Francisco
public schools. In addition, along with drummer Ricky Carter
I've started writing and working with an excellent singer/
songwriter called Jen Triano and we plan to record a CD and start
playing shows in the very near future. Also, I played in the house
band for the pilot of a T.V. show about the roots of hip hop called
Funk U and recorded recent sessions with producers Joel Jaffe and
Johannes Luley.
August 2004 This Summer I've been busy with a lot of recording
work including a contemporary Christian CD with Vineyard Music Group
artist Scott Underwood and tracks with 75 Degrees, Essence, Chris
James and Beth Waters.
Zigaboo has been keeping a low profile but
he's got a show coming up at Slim's on August 22nd. I've been doing a lot of gigs with Shana
Morrison. 75 Degrees continue to gig and record. Church and Gospel
work continues and I've been working with Leah Tysse, a singer from
Glide Church and have had one of my original songs "At Last Our Time
is Here" performed by the Modern Gospel Ensemble in Ireland. I've
also had the pleasure of putting together some special private
events with an excellent band featuring singer Fred Ross. Finally,
I've been playing some hugely enjoyable gigs with Kelvin Dixon on
drums and vocals, Takezo on guitar and vocals and Nancy Wright on
sax, playing old time r&b and funk. It's really the ultimate
party band (got to get some sound clips up here).
Cheers, Eamonn
May 17 2004 Zigaboo Modeliste has released his new and 2nd solo
CD: "I'm On The Right Track" which I played on. It features an all
star line up of musicians including Doctor John, Bernie Worrell,
Ivan Neville, Bobby Vega... the list goes on. It's a privilege to be
part of such auspicious company on what is a really fun record by
someone I think of as a hugely influential musician.
I've started working with Shana Morrison,
Van's daughter and a good singer and writer in her own right. Lots
of gigs booked over the summer.
I've also been working with Beth Waters whose
recently released CD has deservedly been receiving a lot of
attention,.Essence (live, in studio and some T.V. work) and a local
hip hop group called 75 Degrees.
Along with uillean piper Todd Denman and
Nigerian multi instumentalist Danjuma Adamu - I will be taking part
in the AIMS program run by the San Francisco Symphony, playing music
in the public schools. We've put together a fun show blending Irish,
African and American music. More
soon...
Mardi Gras 2004 The Aniar CD "Soulstice" just received some real nice
new reviews including this one in Keyboard Magazine:
"Uillean piper Todd Denman and B-3 player
Eamonn Flynn are mirror images: Todd an American who grew up with
funk and R&B and mastered traditional Irish piping, Eamonn an
Irish who grew up with trad Irish music and later mastered funk and
R&B Hammond. Soulstice is an unlikely fusion of R&B,
gospel and Irish music that sounds so natural and obvious it makes
you wonder where this music has been all this time. Denman and Flynn
have sensitively and ingeniously reharmonized a host of trad Irish
favorites, with hauntingly affecting results. I can't describe how
strongly (or why) it feels like home to me. Even if it doesn't
affect you the same way, it's delightful and worthy of your
attention." Ken Hughes - Keyboard
Magazine - March 2004
It's gratifying that people are responding to
this CD. It was a labour of love, conceived out of an instinctual
feeling that soul music is soul music wherever it comes from,
developed live and recorded (guerilla style) with everyone playing
at the same time - the way they used to make records...
Zigaboo did a very fun Mardi Gras gig at the
Great American Music Hall with all the San Francisco revellers out
in force! Check out the photos taken by Chet Helms here: http://www.digfotos.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=album39
Also local gigs with Aniar, 75 degrees,
Essence (T.V. show), Annie Sampson, Sonic Ether and recordings with
Vernon Black (Mariah Carey) and my regular church gig in Richmond.
Happy Mardi Gras.
Thanksgiving 2003 I've been getting deeper into the Gospel music side of
things and have been playing organ (and piano) at Macedonia Baptist
Church in Richmond and directing and backing their choir up at other
services.
Bass player Bobby Vega has been playing
Zigaboos' gigs of late and the band has been killing. We're playing
an opener for Los Lobos at The Fillmore on December 5th and playing
The Sweetwater, The Elbo Room and a Mardi Gras show at The Great
American Music Hall to begin 2004.
I've also been writing and recording with
current Tower of Power singer Larry Braggs and bassist Daryll
Anders, working on material for Larry's forthcoming solo project.
Also recording tracks for a new CD by Essence with producers Garth
May and Mike Winger. Happy Thanksgiving to all (although turkey IS
for Christmas...)
October 2003 I've always been a huge fan of The Meters and New
Orleans music in general so it's been a thrill to work with Zigaboo
Modeliste, and alongside him with a host of other great New Orleans
musicians. Over the summer we did some shows out east - at B.B.
King's in New York (click here for a review and photos: http://www.pond.com/~dbrooks/papagrowsfunk-zig-053003.html)
and at the Augusta, NJ Crawfish Festival.
I've wanted to experiment with Hammond organ
in a traditional Irish music setting for a long time and along with
uillean piper Todd Denman have had the chance to do just that. I'm
very happy with the results so far - the CD 'Soulstice' has been
well received and we have been working with some wonderful Nigerian
musicians - Danjuma Adamu, Manus Itene and Soji on a follow up. And
with Todd's slightly more traditional Aniar band line-up I played
the Chicago Celtic Festival September 12th and 13th.
Zigaboo's guitarist Chris Rossbach's band
'Sonic Ether' finished up a bi-monthly Monday night residency at San
Francisco's Boom Boom Room. Jambands.com reported on a recent show
when we had some special guests sit in: http://www.jambands.com/news/news144.html.
Since then we've been playing shows at Bruno's and other San
Francisco clubs.
Also beginning work on UFM's follow up CD to
'Cross-contagulation' and doing sessions with Zigaboo, Larry Braggs,
Essence, Amy Meyers, Craig Nuttycomb, Gary Hitchcock and
Tomanonymous and gigs with Zigaboo, Annie Sampson, Carlos
Washington, Essence, Steppin', Lonnie Tuck, Mojo Deluxe, UFM, Sonic
Strut, Dartanyan Brown, Action Jackson, One Nation Underground,
Masters of the Old School and some stuff with my own jazz organ
trio.
June 2003 Welcome to my website. Well... June 21, 2003
marked the 6th anniversary of when I left Eireann's green fields for
Amerikay. In some ways these are strange times in the U.S., but life
has been treating me well here. Mostly I feel fortunate for the
standard of musicians I've been able to work with. Anyway, thanks
for dropping in - hope to see you at a show
sometime. |
